To see someone you want to photograph – “to see” as in “knowing” – means waiting for the moment in which shot, light and expression can merge and purify that simplest of things (but a very rare one) which is, perhaps we could call it, the person’s essence.

It’s just an instant, sometimes we can’t even see it. And no one would hesitate in thinking: I know that person. In that micro-millesimal second of their existence, they’re recognised.
